Delamare-Deboutteville

Delamare-Deboutteville is the retrospective automobile identity applied to a tiny experimental program by industrialist and inventor Édouard Delamare-Deboutteville and mechanic Léon Malandin at the Mont-Grimont cotton mill in Fontaine-le-Bourg, Normandy. It was not a separately incorporated automobile company, retail operation or series-production marque. In 1882 the pair built a 1.5 HP four-stroke tricycle using town gas. After gas-supply difficulties the same evolving experiment was reportedly converted to petroleum in 1883; these dates are fuel stages, not two catalog models. Early in February 1884 they tested a four-wheel vehicle on the Fontaine-le-Bourg–Cailly road. The machine adapted a horse-drawn hunting break and used a horizontal parallel-twin four-stroke petroleum engine driving the rear axle through shaft, differential and chains. On 12 February 1884 Delamare-Deboutteville and Malandin filed French patent 160267 for an improved gas engine and its applications. Secondary reconstruction-derived specifications give 150 x 230 mm cylinders, approximately 8,129 cc, about 8 HP at 250 rpm and 10 km/h. FFVE reports roughly 1,800 kg laden; a sharply conflicting 392 kg chronology is not substituted. The patent and official French histories make the vehicle an important early four-wheel internal-combustion milestone, but its title and disputed physical evidence do not justify an unqualified claim that it was the world's first automobile. No customer delivery, retail model designation or production range followed. Later Simplex stationary engines, Cockerill licenses and a 100 HP exhibition engine were industrial work, not automobile models. Replicas reconstructed in 1984 are historical representations rather than original production. Two rows—the 1882–83 gas/petroleum experimental tricycle and one 1884 four-wheel prototype—capture the defensible program.
