Porsche's plug-in hybrid flagship paired a race-derived V8 with two electric motors and reset what a road car could do on a race track.
When Porsche unveiled the 918 Spyder, it framed the car less as a successor to the Carrera GT than as a rolling argument that electrification and outright speed were not opposites. Production ran between 2013 and 2015, and Porsche capped the total at exactly 918 examples, a figure that doubles as the model's name. Each open-topped two-seater was hand-built, and the car arrived alongside contemporary hybrid hypercars from McLaren and Ferrari that chased the same idea at nearly the same moment.
At the heart of the car sits a 4.6-litre naturally aspirated V8 derived from Porsche's endurance-racing engines, mounted amidships and spun to a redline far beyond ordinary road-car practice. Two electric motors, one on each axle, supplement it: the combination delivers all-wheel drive and a combined output of 887 hp routed through a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox. A lithium-ion battery lets the machine run on electricity alone for short distances, so the same car that attacks a circuit can also creep silently through a city.
The 918 Spyder's defining result came at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, where it lapped the full circuit in 6:57 and became the first street-legal production car to break the seven-minute barrier. That run, more than any brochure line, signalled that hybrid assistance had become a performance tool rather than an efficiency compromise. In the years since, the 918 Spyder has been read as a landmark in Porsche's history, the point at which the company's motorsport engineering and its electric ambitions first met in a single road car.

The 918 Spyder's 6.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack delivers an all-electric range of 19 km (12 mi) under the US Environmental Protection Agency's five-cycle tests.
