Benz & Cie. was founded in Mannheim in 1883 by Carl Benz, Max Rose and Friedrich Wilhelm Eßlinger. The company commercialized Benz's Patent-Motorwagen and became one of the earliest large-scale automobile producers. It expanded into passenger cars, commercial vehicles and engines before merging with Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz and the Mercedes-Benz marque.
