John and Harry Weller founded Weller Brothers, Engineers, in West Norwood in 1899 as an automobile and motorcycle workshop. With financial backing from John Portwine, the firm developed the advanced Weller Four Seat Tourer, displayed in 1903, and produced Weller motorcycles from 1902. Financial constraints ended the original company's own-car and motorcycle production around 1904–05; the partners then formed Autocars and Accessories, whose Auto-Carrier eventually became the foundation of AC Cars.
