Austrian engineer Edmund Rumpler founded Rumpler Luftfahrzeugbau in Berlin in 1909; the company later operated as Rumpler-Werke and built aircraft as well as automobiles. Its 1921 Tropfenwagen was an influential rear-engine aerodynamic car, but weak sales and postwar financial pressures led the Augsburg subsidiary into receivership in 1923 and the Berlin company into receivership in 1925. The catalog treats Rumpler as the historical automobile and aircraft identity and keeps it separate from later aircraft companies and Rumpler-designed prototypes.
