Ransom E. Olds founded the REO Motor Car Company in Lansing, Michigan, in 1904 after leaving the company that became Oldsmobile. REO built passenger cars such as the Flying Cloud and Royale and became especially important for commercial vehicles, including the Speed Wagon. Automobile production was dropped in 1936 so the company could concentrate on trucks; the REO name continued through later truck operations, so the catalog's 1904–36 history refers specifically to the automobile identity.
