NSU began in 1873 as a knitting-machine works in Riedlingen and moved to Neckarsulm, later producing bicycles and motorcycles. Automobile production began in the early twentieth century, paused after the sale of its car works to Fiat, and resumed in the 1950s. NSU pioneered rotary-engined production cars including the Ro 80 before merging with Auto Union in 1969, a key step in the formation of modern Audi.
