Automotive Design and Development began at Southampton in 1971 and later moved to Accrington. Richard Oakes styled and Phil Sayers engineered its futuristic two-seat Nova, whose entire roof and doors formed a dramatic lifting canopy over a fiberglass shell and Volkswagen Beetle chassis and mechanicals. ADD failed during the 1970s and Nova Cars acquired the rights in 1978. The design subsequently inspired or licensed Ledl, Purvis Eureka, Défi, Totem, Puma, Scorpion, Eagle, Gryff, Sterling, Sovran and Tarantula derivatives worldwide, but those identities are not silently merged into this original British production period.
