D. Napier & Son began developing motor cars in 1899 and produced its first 8 hp car in 1900. Napier became an important early British racing and luxury-car maker, with models including the 40/50 and the 100 hp racing cars, before wartime demand shifted the company toward aero engines. Car production ceased in 1924 even though the Napier engineering name continued in aircraft and industrial work; the catalog keeps this automobile identity separate from later D. Napier & Son aerospace history.
