Micro Compact Car AG, or MCC, was founded in Switzerland in 1994 by Daimler-Benz and Swatch to develop an innovative compact city car. The project produced the smart city-coupé, first shown in 1997 and launched in 1998; Swatch withdrew and Daimler-Benz took full ownership in 1998. The company was later renamed Micro Compact Car smart GmbH and then smart GmbH in 2002, so the catalog treats Mcc as the historical MCC identity and keeps it distinct from the later smart marque and from the SMART model label in the vehicle registry.
