Maybach originated with Luftfahrzeug-Motorenbau, founded in 1909 by Wilhelm Maybach and his son Karl to build engines for Zeppelin airships. Maybach began producing luxury automobiles in 1921 and ceased car production after the Second World War. Daimler-Benz acquired the company in 1960, revived Maybach as a standalone ultra-luxury marque in 2002, and later repositioned the name as Mercedes-Maybach.
