Maruti Udyog Limited was incorporated in India in February 1981 as a joint venture between the Government of India and Suzuki Motor Corporation. Production of the Maruti 800 began in 1983 and helped create India's mass passenger-car market; the company later expanded across hatchbacks, sedans, utility vehicles and exports. It became Maruti Suzuki India Limited in 2007 as Suzuki increased its ownership and the business continued as India's largest passenger-vehicle manufacturer. The catalog uses Maruti for the Indian manufacturer and keeps the 800/Alto lineage separate from Suzuki's original Japanese models.
