Leyland DAF was the British commercial-vehicle identity created in 1987 when the Leyland Trucks division of Rover Group merged with Dutch DAF Trucks. The combined business manufactured trucks at Leyland and Eindhoven and vans at the Washwood Heath plant in Birmingham, trading as Leyland DAF in the United Kingdom while the wider group used DAF elsewhere. A severe commercial-vehicle downturn led DAF N.V. into receivership in February 1993; management buyouts then formed Leyland Trucks, LDV and related successor businesses. The official Leyland history places the merger and the later 1996/1998 PACCAR acquisitions in that sequence. Leyland DAF is therefore kept separate from the older Leyland Motors, later Leyland Trucks and DAF nameplates, and its commercial-vehicle history is not presented as passenger-car production.
