Nottinghamshire engineer Charles Binks, already known for advanced motorcycles and later for carburettors, introduced the Leader automobile through Charles Binks Ltd at Apsley in 1905. Although conventional in layout, the range was extraordinary in breadth: four-cylinder cars from 1.6 to 7.8 litres sat beside 9.4- and 15.9-litre V8s rated at 60 and 90 hp. Six catalogued types are preserved for this original badge. Production volumes were too low to become profitable, and a successor concern took over the designs in 1906, replacing the public name with New Leader.
