Isuzu's vehicle-making lineage began with a 1916 partnership between Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipbuilding and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Company. The Isuzu name was adopted in the 1930s and the company became especially prominent in diesel engines and commercial vehicles.
