Carrozzeria Ghia was founded in Turin in 1916 by Giacinto Ghia and Gariglio. It became known for lightweight special bodies and influential designs for Alfa Romeo, Fiat, Ferrari, Chrysler, Renault, Volkswagen and Ford, with the postwar Segre period establishing Ghia as a major Italian styling house. Alejandro de Tomaso acquired it in 1967 and Ford bought the business in 1970; the Turin coachbuilding operation closed in 1973, while the Ghia studio continued as part of Ford's design organization until 2001. Ford also used Ghia as a luxury trim name through 2010. The catalog treats Ghia as a coachbuilder/design identity, not a mass-market manufacturer.
