The Finley Robertson Porter Company was founded at Port Jefferson, New York, in 1914 by engineer Finley Robertson Porter after his work with Mercer. Its F.R.P. Model 45 was an unusually powerful, hand-built luxury sports car offered in roadster, touring and town-car forms; only a handful were completed, with estimates ranging from about three to twelve. The company was sold to the U.S. government in 1916 and turned toward aircraft-engine and war-material work. The later Porter Model 45/46, built from 1919 to 1922 by a different company, is kept separate from the F.R.P. marque.
