Chevron New Zealand

Chevron Engineering Specialties Ltd is a New Zealand low-volume engineering, kit-car and race-car manufacturer founded in 1980 and operated by the Fray family, including Evan, Barbara and designer Dan Fray, at Massey/West Auckland. The company is broader than cars: it has made garden trailers, precision-machined and fabricated industrial components, engine-development equipment and road-measuring systems. Its proprietary automobile catalog comprises three model lines. The Classic is a Lotus Seven/clubman-concept open two-seater first built in 1984 and developed over subsequent decades. Customer cars accept varied engines and drivetrains; at least two used the alloy Leyland P76 V8. It is the most numerous Chevron New Zealand model, but no dependable total or generation ledger is published. During the 1990s Chevron developed the Aprisa, a closed sports-racing car based around Mazda RX-7 Series 4 and 5 rotary drivetrain, suspension and running gear. Aprisas competed successfully in New Zealand sports-car racing and have been described as available in road/race form, though accessible sources give no precise production start, delivery total or final year. In 2010 Chevron began the Dan Fray-designed Cypher as a clean-sheet road/race sports car. The road version uses a carbon-fibre/Kevlar composite chassis and a fuel-injected lightweight 4.4-litre multivalve V8. The competition version combines a space frame and unitary body with a turbocharged fuel-injected engine. Official company material continues to call Cypher its latest project and offers road or race trim, but no verified delivery ledger, price or performance specification is published; the open-ended row indicates ongoing documented company presentation, not an assertion of annual volume. By 2009 Chevron reported completing 22 cars of various types, all but two exported. That total predates Cypher and is not split reliably among Classic, Aprisa and commissions. Chevron also undertook exceptional one-off or replica builds: Jaguar C-Type and a 1955 D-Type exported to Britain, Lotus Eleven, a 1966 Ford GT40 recreation developed over fourteen months with folded/spot-welded 20-gauge steel monocoque, fiberglass panels, Ford 302 V8, ZF transaxle and Girling four-pot brakes, plus an alloy-bodied Ferrari 206 SP Dino recreation with space frame and genuine-style 2.0-litre Dino V6 for a Christchurch customer. These commissioned replicas retain Jaguar, Lotus, Ford and Ferrari subject identity and are not falsely multiplied into Chevron production families, but their construction details are preserved as evidence of capability. This company is entirely distinct from Derek Bennett's British Chevron racing-car manufacturer, Chevron Racing Cars Scotland/Heritage continuation businesses, Chevron petroleum, Chevron model toys and unrelated dealers. Three rows account for every proprietary Chevron New Zealand model line.
