Chevrolet Corvette (C4)
The Chevrolet Corvette (C4) is the fourth generation of the Corvette sports car, manufactured and marketed by the Chevrolet division of General Motors for 1983–1996 model years. While no 1983 Corvettes were sold to the public, GM built 43 pre-production pilot cars for engineering and testing. All but one of these test vehicles were ordered to be destroyed. One white pre-production 1983 Corvette—VIN 1G1AY0783D5100023—escaped the crusher. It was hidden away, temporarily parked outside the factory, and largely forgotten for years. After being rediscovered and restored, it was spared and remains the only true 1983 Corvette in existence. It miraculously survived a massive sinkhole at the museum in 2014 and is permanently on display at the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky. In 1986 The convertible returned, as did higher performance engines, exemplified by the 375 hp (280 kW) LT5 found in the ZR1. In early March 1990, the ZR1 would set new records for the highest average speed over 24 hours at over 175 mph (282 km/h) and highest average speed over 5,000 miles at over 173 mph (278 km/h). With a completely new chassis and styling, and other improvements to the model, prices rose and sales declined. The last C4 was produced on June 20, 1996.
