Cannondale

Cannondale began in 1971 as an American bicycle company founded by Joe Montgomery and partners, but its admitted MX 400 identity belongs to a short-lived motorsports program. In the late 1990s Cannondale developed an advanced four-stroke motocross motorcycle with fuel injection, electric start and a reverse-cylinder engine; production of the MX400 began in 2000, followed by the related FX400 ATV program. The ambitious Pennsylvania motorcycle factory and engineering effort proved financially unsustainable, and Cannondale's motorsports business entered bankruptcy before ATK acquired the assets and continued some off-road products under its own identity. The bicycle company and current Cannondale bicycle brand are not merged with the motorcycle program's successor. The catalog keeps MX400 as a distinct Cannondale powersports experiment and does not infer that ordinary M-series bicycles or later ATK motorcycles were Cannondale-branded vehicles.
