BUMHAN Mobility began on 5 January 2016 as SUM Global, entering South Korea's environmentally friendly commercial-vehicle market and beginning development of a Korean-market 11-metre low-floor electric bus. The first E-SKY I obtained relevant transport, environment and industry certifications and launched in 2019. That year a joint agreement with Bumhan Industries joined SUM's bus activity to the manufacturing and energy expertise of the broader Bumhan group. SKY2/E-SKY II followed in 2020, when the company adopted the Bumhan Automobile corporate identity and explicitly positioned itself as an electric- and hydrogen-commercial-vehicle specialist. Early E-SKY buses were ODM or imported Chinese-platform vehicles localized and sold for Korea; this sourcing is retained rather than presenting them as clean-sheet domestic designs. In 2021 the company registered as a Korean motor-vehicle manufacturer, invested roughly KRW 30 billion with Haman County, and expanded a production site in the Chilseo Industrial Complex. Its recognized in-house research institute developed the 350 kWh E-SKY/E-STAR 11 platform and led national projects for roof-connected automatic bus charging and a trailer-mounted continuous-output 60 kW fuel-cell range-extender system. A broad 2022 lineup brought medium E-STAR 8, large E-STAR 11, 12-metre intercity E-STAR 12i and nine-metre SKY 9/E-SKY 9 buses. The first two used imported component/platform origins but were assembled within BUMHAN's Korean manufacturing system; E-STAR 12i was an imported Ankai-derived standard-floor electric bus, while E-SKY models were associated with Huanghai-derived platforms. Distinct names and chassis sizes are retained, while battery or seating options within each remain configurations. In 2024 BUMHAN became a consolidated Bumhan-group affiliate under sole-management control, committed approximately KRW 100 billion to Changwon's opportunity-development zone and acquired the former STX Engine/HD Hyundai Marine Engine Naedong factory in the Changwon National Industrial Complex. This established a larger base for complete electric and hydrogen vehicles. The next transition emphasized domestically certified models and Korean battery cells. In 2025 BUMHAN completed a large NCM battery pack using domestic cells and certified E-STAR 11K and E-STAR 8K. The current 11K uses a 340.3 kWh SK NCM pack and 348 kW motor in a 10.95 m low-floor bus; the 8K uses 255.2 kWh and 245 kW in an 8.995 m chassis. For 2026 the company certified E-STAR 7K, a compact village bus, and E-SKY 9K, a 9.57 m model with 255.24 kWh battery and 290 kW motor. Development of FC9 and FC12 fuel-cell models and a hydrogen-combustion intercity-bus project signals planned expansion beyond battery buses, but these programs do not become catalog rows until complete vehicles are documented. Eleven model families account for E-SKY I, E-SKY II, E-SKY 11, E-SKY 9, E-STAR 8 V1, E-STAR 11, E-STAR 12i and the current 11K, 8K, 7K and 9K. The catalog distinguishes major platform and certification generations without multiplying battery, seating, route-equipment or annual specification variants.
