Shoe-machinery maker and inventor Herbert H. Buffum experimented with a four-cylinder Stanhope in 1894–1895 before H. H. Buffum & Company began automobile production at Abington, Massachusetts, in 1901. Early luxury cars used horizontal or inline fours, ranging from the 20 HP Roi-des-Belges model to compact and large 1905 roadsters, tonneaux and tourers. Buffum's most consequential design was the 1904 Model G Greyhound, which coupled two horizontal fours into a flat-eight and was offered in regular sales literature, making it an early American production-offered eight-cylinder car. The final 40 HP used a purpose-designed V8 in 1906–1907. Automobile production then ended; a Hall-badged 40 HP continuation is historically related but remains outside the Buffum register.
