Semi-professional racer Bob Carnes founded Bocar in Lakewood, Colorado, combining letters from his own name for the badge. Three 1958 X-series experiments led to roughly five XP-4s and then the XP-5, the first regular-production design, whose low fiberglass body and welded chromoly frame typically carried a Corvette 283 V8. Longer-wheelbase supercharged XP-6 and naturally aspirated XP-7 derivatives followed, along with three XP-7Rs and three streamlined Stiletto racers. Period testing credited the XP-5 with 0–60 mph in about six seconds and approximately 160 mph. A 1962 fire destroyed Carnes's shop, cars and chassis, ending manufacture after nine documented types.
