C. H. Black Manufacturing Company built early gasoline vehicles in Indianapolis from 1896 through 1900, with some evidence of an experimental predecessor as early as 1891. The documented production range covered phaeton, back-to-back dos-à-dos and commercial business-wagon bodies, powered in ratings from 2.5 to 8 hp and using two-speed transmissions. Surviving references do not preserve individual type names, so these variants are maintained as one source-defined range rather than assigned invented model codes. In 1900 the company sold its vehicle patents for $20,000. This marque is qualified from the unrelated later Chicago Black and Black Crow companies.
