Benz

Benz is the automobile identity developed by Carl Benz in Mannheim. Benz & Cie. was established in 1883, and the company produced the three-wheeled Patent-Motorwagen completed in 1885 and patented on 29 January 1886. The Patent-Motorwagen is widely regarded as the first practical purpose-built automobile; later Benz work progressed through the Victoria, Velo and larger series cars before Benz & Cie. joined Daimler in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz. The catalog's Benz entry is limited to the Patent-Motorwagen identity and should not be read as a claim that the 1886 vehicle was already a modern Mercedes-Benz model. Bertha Benz's 1888 long-distance demonstration is part of the vehicle's public history, while the later Mercedes-Benz marque and corporate successor are kept distinct from the original Benz record.
