Marshall & Company built Manchester cars from 1897, initially under its own name and along Hurtu/Benz lines. A modern four-seat twin-cylinder car introduced the Marshall-Belsize name in 1901, after the Clayton bicycle works, and the enterprise became Belsize Motor & Engineering Company in 1903 and Belsize Motors Limited in 1906. Before the First World War it employed roughly 1,200–1,500 people and made as many as fifty vehicles weekly, ranging from small Juniors to enormous six-cylinder cars, taxis, commercial vehicles and fire engines. Passenger production restarted with the 2.8-litre 15 HP after the war. Financial pressure led to receivership in 1923, while the separate Belsize-Bradshaw badge expanded across the replacement range in 1924. The Belsize-badged register therefore ends at that transition rather than absorbing the later identity.
