N. von Jakabffy GmbH began producing Max Bartsch's Baja cyclecar in Vienna in 1920; the badge combined the opening syllables of Bartsch and Jakabffy and was also advertised as meaning 'cheaper than any other.' Production passed through Ing. Max Bartsch & Frankmann, Baja Cyclecar Co. and finally Fischamender Werke AG, while a separate sales company handled export from 1922. Baja's strikingly light cars lacked a separate frame: a plywood body for one or two occupants carried the components, with a rear engine driving the right rear wheel by chain through three speeds. Three engine types define the complete known range—an initial 460 cc air-cooled Hiero single, a 603 cc water-cooled single from February 1922, and a 790 cc twin. Baja won its class at the 1920 Riederberg event, but production ended in 1925.
