Electrical engineer Otto von Bachelle completed his first small electric automobile in Chicago in autumn 1900 and organized the Bachelle Automobile Company. The compact Stanhope used an unusual steering handle outside the body on the right, moved fore and aft to turn, leaving the front compartment clear. Contemporary and later sources credit approximately 35 miles of travel per charge. Production remained very small and ended by 1903 or 1904. Von Bachelle later worked as a consulting engineer for Hupmobile, but no second Bachelle model family is documented.
