Melvyn Kay established Avante Cars at Stoke-on-Trent in 1982. The fiberglass coupé body sat on Volkswagen Beetle chassis and normally retained its rear air-cooled flat-four, although water-cooled Volkswagen inline-fours were optional. Approximately twenty-five original two-seaters were produced. A longer +2 joined in 1983 and accounted for roughly five further cars. Kay's production ended in 1986, but Paul de Roma's Top Hat Coachworks briefly continued the project at Blackpool in 1987, bringing total output to about thirty.
