Former executives of Autokinitoviomihania Ellados founded Automeccanica in 1979 to serve Greece's tax-favored passenger-utility market. Its own Zebra combined an open locally produced body with Daihatsu Charade mechanicals; about two thousand were built from 1981 to 1985. The company also assembled the Charade under Daihatsu identity. When tax rules changed, Zebra ended and Automeccanica licensed the Lada Niva while developing an open derivative. It acquired its former parent and the Thiva factory in 1988, then withdrew from automobile construction in 1995. Licensed Daihatsu and Lada models remain assigned to those badges.
