The Austral Gas Engine Works of Leichhardt, New South Wales, experimented broadly with powered cycles and cars during Australia's earliest motoring years. Three vehicles are specifically identified under the Australis name: a motor bicycle with its engine beneath the saddle in 1896, a two-seat 3 hp single-cylinder light buggy in 1900, and a 7 hp twin-cylinder buggy in 1906. Each was a one-off rather than a series model. The surviving 1900 water-cooled four-stroke engine, associated with a car used at Nelligen, is preserved by Sydney's Powerhouse collection.
