Frederick Hugh Gordon returned from the United States after the First World War with engineering information and prototype material for a six-cylinder car intended to challenge imports. F. H. Gordon & Company launched Australian Six in 1919 and opened a large Ashfield factory in 1920. Conventional chassis used mostly Rutenber straight-six engines with Grant Lees or Muncie gearboxes, although some received Ansted overhead-valve units, and five locally built body forms were offered under an emphatically national slogan. High Australian production costs defeated the project after roughly 500 cars; final examples were completed by Harkness and Hillier in 1925.
