Aurus grew from the Kortezh state-vehicle program begun in 2013 under Russia's NAMI research institute. The name combines aurum, aura and Rus. Vladimir Putin's new Senat Limousine made the family public at his May 2018 inauguration, while the Arsenal escort minivan entered government-fleet use and a ceremonial Senat Cabriolet followed in 2019. Aurus then moved beyond hand-built state cars: civilian Senat series production opened at Yelabuga in May 2021 and Komendant SUV production began in November 2022. The range shares a Unified Modular Platform and a Russian-developed 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid system with nine-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Senat Long fills the space between the regular sedan and presidential limousine, while a restyled state car appeared in 2024 ahead of planned civilian manufacture. Prototype hydrogen Senats and Aurus-branded motorcycles are acknowledged but not miscounted as production automobiles.
