Austrian-born engineer Helmut Schlosser created the American Special Automotive Research and Design Organization at North Bergen, New Jersey. Its low gullwing 1500 AR-S debuted at the 1959 New York show with Alfa Romeo twin-cam power and credible SCCA results. Although two cars per month and a Weehawken factory were announced, disagreement over selling complete Alfa-powered cars versus buyer-engined rollers ended financing. In 1961 Schlosser converted the sole chassis for Charlie Kolb and Overkey Motors, installing a Buick 215 aluminum V8 and Corvette transmission as the 3500 GM-S. No second car was built.
