Henri Jeannin founded the Berlin business in 1902 as Internationale Automobilzentrale, initially building cars copied from Panhard & Levassor with French engines and components. From 1903 Argus introduced its own 2.38-litre twin and 4.96- and 9.24-litre fours. The engine operation became Argus Motoren in 1906 and increasingly concentrated on marine, airship and aircraft powerplants, eventually becoming one of Germany's important aviation-engine firms. Own-brand automobile manufacture ended as that specialization took hold; a 1929 Horch engine project did not revive the Argus car marque.
