Ansaldo's first small automobile experiment was the 1906 PF-1VA on Peugeot Bébé foundations, but series activity began in 1919 as part of postwar conversion from armaments. The reliable overhead-cam 4A established the range; 4CS competition cars gave a young Tazio Nuvolari early prominence, while six-cylinder 6-series chassis and the later Tipo 18 moved upmarket. The 3.5-litre straight-eight Tipo 22 crowned the program. Financial crises led to OM control in 1932 and ultimately Fiat ownership, yet low-volume Tipo 33 and 42 chassis were assembled from remaining components through 1937. The automobile badge is distinguished from Ansaldo's much broader locomotive, ship, aircraft and defense businesses.
