The American Motors Corporation of Plainfield, New Jersey, began assembling its American Balanced Six in 1917 from specialist components including Rutenber engines, Borg & Beck clutches, Warner transmissions and Stromberg carburetors. ‘Balanced’ referred to chassis design, while advertising promised ‘miles of smiles’. A 58 hp Herschell-Spillman six replaced the earlier 45 hp engine in 1920, when annual output peaked near 1,400. Louis Chevrolet briefly served as engineering head. American joined Bessemer, Northway and Winther in Amalgamated Motors in 1923 and stopped production before spring 1924 after roughly 6,000 cars.
