Mazda began Project Pegasus in California in 1988 to create an American-focused luxury division able to challenge Acura, Infiniti and Lexus. Publicly announced in August 1991, Amati signed 67 dealers and planned compact 300, Miller-cycle 500 and twelve-cylinder 1000 sedans for 1994. Japan's asset-price collapse and Mazda's liquidity shortage forced cancellation in October 1992. No production car was sold as an Amati: the 300 and 500 programs appeared through Eunos, Mazda and Xedos channels, while the running 1000 prototypes and W12 tooling were abandoned.
