American Motors acquired Kaiser-Jeep's General Products Division in 1970 and organized it as AM General in 1971, inheriting a lineage extending through Willys military and commercial vehicles. The company built postal DJ-5s, M151 and medium/heavy tactical trucks, and more than 5,000 Metropolitan buses before developing the M998 HMMWV from 1979. A 1983 contract launched the Humvee into mass production and global service. AM General also contract-built separate Hummer, MV-1 and other marques, while its own modern portfolio evolved through protected HUMVEE variants, Hawkeye, Saber, MIMIC-V and the JLTV A2 contract.
