NV Haarlemsche Automobiel & Motorrijwielfabriek began producing Altena motorcycles and automobiles around 1900. Its first car used a 3.5 hp De Dion-Bouton single-cylinder, while a broader 8, 10 and 12 hp range appeared in 1905. A second motorcycle design was developed as early as 1902. Production remained artisanal—estimates range from roughly ten to fifty cars—and the company was declared bankrupt in 1906, although remaining vehicles were advertised into 1907.
