Frederick W. Allard and George Pilkington established Allard & Co at Coventry in 1889, initially making cycles. Motorcycles followed around 1897 and a De Dion-style motor tricycle and first automobile appeared in 1898–1899. The car range progressed through the Benz-like Express, a small air-cooled 3 HP design, contract-built Charette and a final 9 HP light car. Birmingham Motor Manufacturing and Supply took control in 1901, continuing Allard products alongside the first Rex machines before the business became Rex Motor Manufacturing in 1902. This marque is unrelated to Sydney Allard's later sports cars.
