Alois Barmettler began building Albar vehicles at Buochs in 1978 after developing dune-buggy and cross-country conversions based on the Volkswagen Beetle. In the early 1980s he introduced the Austrian-bodied Jet coupé, sold as Strato in Austria. The open Sonic followed in 1982 on a purpose-built space frame rather than a Beetle floorpan, with later versions using Volkswagen inline-four or Renault 25 engines; a fixed-head coupé expanded the Sonic family. The documented company period extends through 1993.
