Alexander von Falkenhausen had helped develop BMW's successful 328 before opening a Munich garage after the Second World War to tune and convert surviving 328s. He founded AFM in 1948 and progressed to purpose-built Formula Two single-seaters, initially using BMW-derived six-cylinder power. Hans Stuck brought early success with the AFM-1 and later helped develop Richard Küchen's lightweight V8 for the AFM-4. Roughly a dozen complete cars or chassis were made, with several entering World Championship races run to Formula Two rules in 1952–1953. AFM withdrew when those regulations were abandoned, and von Falkenhausen returned to BMW in 1954.
