A. H. Adams and American engineer Edward Ringwood Hewitt formed the Adams Manufacturing Company at Bedford in 1905. Their first Adams-Hewitt used a horizontal single beneath the seat, chain drive and a supposedly foolproof pedal-controlled epicyclic transmission. Hewitt returned to America and the British badge became Adams in 1906–1907; conventional front engines, shaft drive and sliding gearboxes followed. Twelve passenger types ranged from singles and twins to four- and six-cylinder cars and the eleven-unit 7.3-litre 35/40 HP V8. Roughly 3,000 vehicles were built before production ended in 1914; the business then returned to electrical equipment.
