The Colgate family founded Abenaque Machine Works at Westminster Station, Vermont, in 1883 to make agricultural machinery, engines and pumps. In 1900 the company undertook a gasoline automobile, but chose not to enter series car production and returned its focus to industrial products. Later experiments included a large 15 hp gasoline traction engine. Abenaque moved to Marlborough, New Hampshire, in 1914 and failed in August 1915. Because no factory designation or specifications survive, its single automobile is documented as an experimental prototype rather than expanded into invented models.
