ABC Motors was established at Hersham, Surrey, in 1912 by Ronald Charteris, with Granville Bradshaw serving as its principal designer. The business first developed engines and wartime aviation equipment, then applied Bradshaw's air-cooled engineering to the transverse flat-twin ABC motorcycle, the compact Skootamota scooter and a chain-driven light car. Sopwith manufactured the motorcycle under licence after the First World War while ABC continued vehicle and engine work at Hersham. Car production faded during the 1920s; the wider engineering company survived until its absorption into Vickers in 1951.
